John LoVerde FASA
John LoVerde is the founding partner and President of Westside Acoustics & Vibration Engineering. With thirty-five years in the field of architectural acoustics, John brings a deep technical knowledge base to his clients. John has designed buildings in every sector, including housing, hospitality and resorts, education for K-12 and C&U, entertainment, performing arts, commercial core & shell and tenant improvement, fitness facilities, healthcare, and urban planning. John assists clients on projects of all sizes.
John provides not only acoustical technical expertise but sensitivity to client needs. He is able to develop solutions responsive to those needs, resulting in a design that is finely attuned with client goals.
Innovation is a hallmark of John’s career. Along with co-author Wayland Dong, he developed a paradigm-shifting approach for impact noise assessment in two dimensions, published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. This approach responds to many of the historical impact noise rating problems, yielding superior tools for designer, evaluator, and building owner. Another innovation is development of an acoustical design risk management system for developers. This system helps optimize acoustical performance with cost, aesthetic, and other design considerations, transforming client design portfolios and maximizing client profits.
Along with John’s consulting work, he has engaged in research, presenting within the U.S. and internationally for over 25 years. John and his co-authors have presented original work in the fields of architectural and environmental acoustics, on subjects such as airborne and impact sound isolation, HVAC and plumbing noise, heavy weight impacts, statistical approaches to architectural acoustical design, and statistical assessment of environmental noise. This work not only expands the general knowledge base in the community but also enables John to remain at the leading edge of the field.
John’s investment in research continues through his activity as President of the Paul S. Veneklasen Research Foundation. The Foundation is a non-profit whose purpose is to promote furtherance of acoustical science through research and education. The foundation has partnered with universities in to fund research in architectural acoustics, medical ultrasound, microphone technology, psychoacoustics, and animal bioacoustics. The Foundation has sponsored student work at graduate and undergraduate levels and has funded an open-source acoustics textbook to facilitate access to acoustics education across a wider audience.
John serves as ASTM liaison to ISO for building and environmental acoustics. In this role he is responsible for representing the technical expertise of and voting on behalf of the United States, to assist in development of ISO standards.
